This is not a guide on how to work from home
This is a snapshot of how I am taking care of my multi-hyphenate self during a mother-ducking pandemic
This is a snapshot of how I’m taking care of my multi-hyphenate self during a mother-ducking pandemic:
I pack my work tools away Whether I’m done for the day or moving on to a totally different task that requires totally different tools, the physical separation helps with the mental separation. Out of sight, out of mind.
Less tech, more real life
In lockdown round 1, I made a conscious effort to find enjoyment and hobbies offline. It means that any screen time I do have is optimised well. I’m less likely to procrastinate and flick between tabs if I’m mindful of how and when I’m using technology.
Phone-call, email or zoom? Whether it’s a query or a convo, I’m more mindful of how I communicate and which method best suits the situation. And I encourage folk I’m working with to tell me their preferences too.
I use Forest. Forest is a productivity app where you set a timer and grow a tree. If you use your phone before time is up, your tree dies. Thanks to Allison Bennie for introducing me to it, many Admin Mornings ago.
The Lionel Richie Challenge!
I had a teacher at school (Mr Thompson!) who, when we were working on a group task, would give us until the end of a song for us to complete it. (It wasn’t always a Lionel track, sometimes he’d take requests!) I find this keeps me motivated during bitesize chunks of boring admin tasks. I’ll create a short playlist or choose a podcast episode and when that’s over, so is my time on the task.
Nature knows best I try to spend more time outside. With a cuppa or with my notebook. I enjoy clearing my mind and taking notice of the trees and the birds and the neighbour’s cat who always seems so shocked that I am in my garden 🐱
More playing, less admin I want to spend as much time as I can having fun. I try to be efficient with admin so that I can clear the decks and concentrate on the creative elements of my work. And even with the more dull aspects, I try to take heed from my pal Mary Poppins: “with every job that must be done, there is an element of fun.” You just gotta find it!
Are you able to work from home? If so, care to share which habits have helped you adapt? I’d love to know!
